The Summer Event of ArtHouston 2008, encompassing exhibitions at 38 galleries both introducing new artists and celebrating established ones, will open Saturday, July 12. A daylong event, it is expected to be the busiest day of the year with many galleries holding evening receptions. Many other galleries will hold receptions on the Friday evening, July 11. A wide range of work will be on display, from realist to abstract paintings, sculpture to mixed media constructions, drawings and works on paper, collage and photography. The featured artists will be both emerging regional talents and established artists from around the world.

Participating galleries include those  along Colquitt, in the Museum District, the Heights and other areas. The galleries of ArtHouston invite you to their opening activities and to exhibitions continuing through the month.

ArtHouston began as Introductions in 1979 as a way to further art awareness during the summer months.  In 1998 the name was changed to ArtHouston and expanded to include 30 participating galleries.  This year there are 36 galleries participating.  Many of the art works are priced modestly to encourage new collectors to take the first step on the road to building an art collection.  The desire is to encourage younger collectors as well as seasoned veterans to acquire new works of art.  This annual collaboration among the leading galleries in the city celebrates the diverse visual contribution that private galleries and their exhibiting artists give to the people of Houston year round.

ArtHouston is an event organized by the Houston Art Dealers Association, including member and non-member galleries. The ArtHouston Summer event is free and open to the public.
